The 162nd Wine Sale will take place on November 18, 19 and 20, 2022
The Hospices de Beaune Wine Sale is a prestigious traditional charity auction of Burgundy wines from the Hospices de Beaune. The result of the sales orchestrated by Christie's from 2005 to 2020, then by Sotheby's since 2021, has been intended for five centuries to finance hospitals and retirement homes in Beaune in Burgundy, medical research and charities. This sale of Burgundy wines is the most famous in the world and traditionally serves as an international barometer of the prestige wine market.

The first sale dates back to 1859, the reputation became worldwide in 1924. In 1934, the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin established the Trois Glorieuses, a cultural event that included the sale of the Hospices de Beaune. The sale initially took place in the courtyard of the Hospices de Beaune, and now in the Halles de Beaune located opposite the building. The forty-five prestige cuvées obtained each year are sold the same year in the form of pieces, i.e. nearly 400 to 600 barrels of 228 liters since 1794 (i.e. 288 bottles after aging) in the form of traditional charity auctions. (originally "by candlelight", now discontinued) to world fame, on the third Sunday of November. The candle sale, is a special form of auction since it consists of bidding as long as two candles are lit. Bidding ends as soon as both candles have expired. More precisely, this very old custom is done at the time of the last auction. A small wick is then lit which, when it goes out, after thirty seconds, lets smoke rise. After its extinction, a second candle is lit and then a third. At the end of the combustion, if no other new bid occurs during this time, the auction is pronounced in favor of the last bidder.

The "President's Coin" represents the top of the sale with all proceeds going to a charity chosen by the President of the Sale. It is the auctions of this piece that are the most publicized. The result of sales of between 1.8 and 14 million € for the best years, as well as donations from generous donors, have been devoted entirely for five centuries to the charitable and religious operations of the old hospices and then of the new civil and secular hospital institutions which replaced them. meanwhile. At the end of the sale, a grand gala dinner is organized in the medieval setting of the Hôtel Dieu bastion.
